Student Academics Fall 2021
General Frequently Asked Questions
What does a mark of “MG” mean (prior to Fall 2020)?
The mark of MG (missing grade) results from the failure of the instructor to assign a grade for you. Grades submitted late require manual entry in the system by the Grades Department, which can result in lengthy delays in posting student grades. If you see a mark of MG in OASIS, contact the instructor. Marks of MG still unresolved after one-year default to a mark of UW (Unofficial Withdrawal).
What does a mark of “NS” mean?
The mark of NS (Not Submitted) results from the failure of the instructor to assign a grade for you or failure to submit grades for the class. If you see a grade of NS in OASIS, please contact the instructor to find out when he/she will provide a final grade. Marks of NS still unresolved after one-year default to a mark of UW (Unofficial Withdrawal).
What do I do if my professor gave me a grade of Incomplete (IN)
Fill out the Assignment of Incomplete Form and send it to your professor for completion. The professor will list the work you must complete to earn a final grade. You must complete the pending work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which the IN was assigned. Incompletes unresolved after one year default to a mark of IX (Expired Incomplete).
What do I do if I have a grade of incomplete (IN) in a course that I recently
completed?
If you were granted a mark of IN (Incomplete) by your professor, you must contact him/her to determine what assignments you have pending to obtain a final grade. Your professor will work with the grades coordinator in his/her department to submit your final grade.
I am a sponsored student. How do I show my sponsor proof of course completion so that I can be
reimbursed?
USC does not automatically mail printed grade reports. Students can print a copy of their Completed Course Summary page on OASIS. The Completed Course Summary shows your name, all your courses, and all your grades earned at USC.
What should I do if I received a grade of B but it should be an A?
Contact your professor. If the instructor committed an error, he/she will ask his/her department grades coordinator to initiate a grade correction.
Why didn't the instructor drop me from the course after I stopped attending it?
Faculty cannot drop students from a course. It is your responsibility to drop courses you do not intend to complete.
When can I see my grades?
The university releases grades on OASIS as soon as the individual faculty members submit them.
What is the deadline to select Pass/No Pass (P/NP) for Fall 2021?
For the university’s main session (001), the deadline to select P/NP is Friday, September 10, 2021.
The Pass/No Pass deadline for courses that do not run from August 23 to December 15 is available by clicking on the three-digit session number in red on the left hand side of the course within Web Registration. The session code is a hyperlink that opens a table with the important dates related to the session of that particular course. The P/NP deadline date is the same date that is listed as the “Last day to add” on the table.
How will I make changes to Pass/No Pass for my Fall 2021 class schedule?
The change can be done via Web Registration on the myCourseBin screen. You can find a specific deadline to change from Pass/No Pass to Letter grade for your Fall course on the myCourseBin screen.
Will the University extend the deadline to withdraw from courses in Fall 2021?
No, unfortunately that was not a permanent policy change.
There are three dates you need to be aware of:
The last day to drop a course without a W and receive a refund is Friday, September 10 for the university’s main session (001), which runs from August 23 and December 15, 2021.
The last day to withdraw without a W on the Official Transcript, and without receiving a refund, is Friday, October 8 for the university’s main session (001).
November 12 is the last day to withdraw from courses in the university’s main session (001) to avoid earning a final grade.
If your program is not following the August 23 to December 15 semester calendar, please find specific deadlines to withdraw from your courses via Web Registration on the myCourseBin screen by clicking on the three-digit session number in red on the left hand side of the course.
Can I take any course for a Pass/No Pass grade?
WRIT 150 and WRIT 340 will not fulfill undergraduate writing requirements if taken on a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) basis. Use of Pass/No Pass coursework to fulfill major requirements must be approved in writing by the academic department. Coursework required for a minor may not be taken on a P/NP basis.
Can I take GE courses for a Pass/No Pass grade?
Only one GE is permitted on a P/NP basis. Students who have previously applied transfer or USC coursework graded P/NP to GE requirements may not apply additional coursework taken on a P/NP basis.
How many units of P/NP-graded courses can I take?
Students entering USC in Fall 2021 can earn up to 24 units of Pass/No Pass credit. This applies to all undergraduate coursework, whether taken at USC or in transfer.
Students who started at USC before Fall 2021 can earn up to 32 units of Pass/No Pass credit. For students who started before Fall 2021 and are pursuing a second bachelor’s degree or a Bachelor of Architecture degree, up to 40 units of Pass/No Pass are permitted.
I’m a graduate student. Can I take any courses for Pass/No Pass?
Graduate students must take all degree-applicable courses for Letter grade.
