FERPA for Parents
Access to student records
At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to access or inspect their son’s
or
daughter's education records. This right is limited solely to the student. We know that many students wish to share their academic record information with their parents and family members. USC provides an easy way for students to grant permission and for relatives to view education records such as registered courses, the list of books required for courses, final grades, restrictions on the student’s account, and reports of progress to degree completion.
To create access for relatives, the student must login to MyUSC.edu and click OASIS. In the Other Services tab, the student must click Establish Guest Access and follow the prompts. A student may create up to six guest accounts. The student’s authorization for access takes effect immediately and remains in effect until the student revokes it or until it expires, six years after authorization. Students may use OASIS to revoke access at any time.
- The student’s USC ID
- The Guest Login ID (created by the student)
- The Guest PIN (created by the student)
Note: Only students may create, revoke, and release Guest Login IDs and Guest PINs. If a parent forgets the USC ID, Guest Login ID, or Guest PIN, the student must provide it.
OASIS for Guests does not hold disciplinary or medical records. Direct all questions regarding disciplinary records to the USC Judicial and Community Standards Office. For medical records, contact the USC Student Health Office.
Crisis situations and emergencies
If non-directory information is needed to resolve a crisis or emergency situation, an education institution may release that information if the institution determines that the information is "necessary to protect the health or safety of the student or other individuals." Factors considered in making this assessment are: the severity of the threat to the health or safety of those involved; the need for the information; the time required to deal with the emergency; and the ability of the parties to whom the information is to be given to deal with the emergency.
Questions or concerns
General questions may be directed to the Office of the General Counsel or the Office of Compliance, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Office for Student Conduct or the Office of the Registrar, as appropriate.
Comments or suggestions should be addressed to the USC Registrar's Office, registrar@usc.edu, (213) 740-4623, or (mail code) MC 0912.
